Transcript

On this episode of the Scent of Light I will speak on healing. Healing is one of the Ten Words to the Creative Spirit, in which my mentor Dr. William Hermanns’ wrote:

Give me Healing so spirit is the light of the flesh.

Each of us can be at either end of healing, as an influential agent of healing and as a recipient of healing. Often a healed person becomes a Healer. There is more than a renewal of body cells involved. One’s Consciousness is touched and a deeper understanding revealed of one being a integral part of the human community and the nature that makes up our environment.

Recently my Tai Chi Chuan teacher came into the morning class to circle us up to see a photo of his 10-week old baby grandson. He then asked us what we would do as a teacher: Cancel the class and drive to Stanford Hospital to be there as the baby grandson is operated on by surgeons; or come to teach the regularly scheduled class? Some students said they would go to the hospital. One student, also a grandmother, felt the chi energy in the class would assist in the healing and that the teacher should teach the class. The teacher agreed with this student. He said that at the very moment of meeting with us in the class his 10-week old grandson was being operated for a severe liver impairment, and that he felt being at the class would build up the Chi in him as support for his grandson as the surgeons operated. He then led us in practicing a set of Tai Chi Chuan.

Our teacher did not know that we students had been planning a holiday gift for him: a hand-made quilt by one of the students incorporating contributions of art and photos from the class. My poem 100 Words to Describe the Tao of a Stalk of Wheat was printed onto fabric and it was added as a panel on the back in the center. The quilt contained colorful triangular shapes and Chinese characters placed to represent our class mantra: "We are a school of fish; we are a flock of birds; we are a group of Tai Chi Masters." This emphasized the consciousness of our moving in unison with one another as we felt the Chi moving within and around our own bodies.

After the first set, we again circled around our teacher and this time we surprised him with the presentation of the colorful quilt. We told him that we infused our love into this quilt every move of the way to completion and presentation. His choice to teach us that day, rather than run hurriedly off with his wife, perhaps worriedly to the hospital, was a testament to his following his intuition and knowledge of the power of Chi from traditions of ancient China and his own daily practice and teaching. He was able to experience first his students' love and gratefulness through the gift of the quilt.

When he left the class with his wife to drive the 2 hours to the hospital, he was vibrating with our healing and caring love that included his grandson in overcoming this early challenge in life. We students left the class aware of our part in the healing gift. Our teacher later posted a photo with his grandson after the surgery with the blanket on his bed. Not only was the grandson's surgery successful, but all of us in the class experienced a quantum leap in the understanding of Chi and compassion, which was the spirit that lit the way for our flesh into creating this quilt and lit our teacher's intuition to come to teach the class and receive the gift.

As my mentor wrote, Give me Healing so spirit is the light of the flesh.
